The head of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) revealed the actor’s return in “Deadpool and Wolverine” in an interview with Empire. According to Feige, he was as moved as everyone else when “Logan” served as a fitting conclusion for Jackman’s portrayal of the mutant hero in 2017.
“You had the best send-off in ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo. I said, ‘Let me give you some advice, Hugh. Don’t come back.'”
Many would likely agree with Feige’s advice at the time. Jackman first appeared as Wolverine in the leather suit in 2000’s “X-Men” and reprised his role in numerous sequels and standalone films. “Logan” is a story dedicated to the older version of the character, and many would agree that it provided a fitting farewell for Jackman and his fans.
Jackman seems to agree with this sentiment, but when the opportunity to star alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool presented itself, he realized that the role was too good to pass up.
“I was about an hour away. And I had this ‘What am I going to do?’ moment. And as I asked the question, I knew that I wanted to be shooting ‘Deadpool and Wolverine.’ I just knew it. I was just driving, just driving. Couldn’t stop thinking about it. I got out of the car and called Ryan and said, ‘Ryan, I’m in.'”
Feige notes that the Wolverine we’ll see in Reynolds’ third Deadpool film isn’t quite the same person fans know from Jackman’s previous X-Men films from 20th Century Fox. Hopefully, this will give the MCU enough room to preserve “Logan” as a worthy farewell while also providing audiences with one last brutal outing with their favorite clawed mutant.
“Deadpool and Wolverine” will weave its titular characters into the MCU when it hits theaters on July 26, 2024.
